Evening Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper
We should glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection, through whom we are saved and delivered.
Brothers and sisters:
I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you,
that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over,
took bread, and, after he had given thanks,
broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.”
In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying,
“This cup is the new covenant in my blood.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,
you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. (1 Cor 11: 23-26)
After the prayer after communion the Blessed Sacrament is brought in procession with incense and candles to a place of repose.
After the last supper Jesus came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. (cf. Lk 22: 39)
The liturgy, which begun in the chapel continued in the refectory, where bread and wine was blessed and served by the Prioress General and her council.
Seven candles on a menorah were enlightened remembering the Jewish rite of Passover.
The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? (Ps 27:1)
And when he came to the Mount of Olives he said to them: „Pray that you may not enter into temptation.“ And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, „Father, if thou art willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.“
(cf Lk 22:40-42)
After supper we prayed compline and stayed with Jesus praying in the chapel of repose, where the cross was removed.
We prayed with and for all those who are suffering from war, fear, distress, pain
believing in the redeeming power of the suffering
which Jesus took on himself for our sake.
The disciples slept while Jesus was in anguish.
We too, went to sleep after a time of prayer.
Yet,
I slept, but my heart was awake,
Hark! my beloved is knocking…
